A Fynbos Dream: Protea

Fynbos is a unique vegetation found only in South Africa, forming part of the Cape Floristic Region; one of the smallest yet most biodiverse floral kingdoms in the world. Many fynbos plants don’t simply survive fire, they need it. The heat and smoke awaken certain seeds, quietly signalling that it’s time to begin again. With thousands of plant species, many found nowhere else on Earth, fynbos shapes the landscapes of the Western Cape, from colourful mountain slopes to coastal plains.

‘A Fynbos Dream’ is a small collection of some of my favourite fynbos plants, imagined in an abstract, dreamlike landscape where the beauty of this remarkable biome is celebrated. Fynbos is delicate yet deeply resilient, and entirely local… which makes it especially meaningful to use as inspiration as a Cape Town–based artist.
